Summary: Kendrick Maple investment bank is a City institution, a bastion of tradition that has belatedly recognised a need to change. To achieve this modernising, it has appointed as chairman Nicholas Quinn, a former Treasury official and grandee of many major institutions. The position brings him into conflict with Bruce Morton, a long standing employee who has risen to become managing director. Morton is outraged at Quinn's crassness and determination to 'upgrade', 'streamline' and 'revamp' the company. While Quinn realises that he and Morton do not see eye-to-eye, he believes that he is gradually winning his colleague over to his way of thinking. Between the two men is Greg Hayden, who, although loyal to his immediate boss Morton, often acts as mediator, trying to limit the fallout from their explosions.
