Full Show Summary At Oswald Maximum Security Correctional Facility there is a place called the Emerald City. Within these cells are a carefully selected group of inmates who are there for the specific purpose of attempting to rehabilitate them, teach them responsibility for their actions, and the hope that they will learn to get along with one another. Of course, people are human and flawed, things doesn’t always work out as planned. The prison is filled with all kinds of people, people who have been incarcerated for a variety of reasons and have different outlooks on how they spend their time in prison. Then there are the guards, all of whom are just as human, and some just as corrupt, as the prisoners they are assigned to watch over. There are many different factions within the prison, some divided along racial or religious lines, others along other, self-imposed ones. There is even Tobias Bleecher, an otherwise successful and law-abiding man whose one transgression was severe enough to put him in prison. The factions and individual prisoners all make plays to hold onto power and influence through various means, sometimes to exert control over other prisoners and sometimes just to survive long enough to make it out of Oz. Watching over it all is Warden Leo Glynn and unit Manager Tim McManus, but all is more truly understood by the wheelchair-bount Augustus Hill, who serves as an explanatory narrator for the viewer. Oz portrays humanity at its worst that is still trying to do the best it can under the darkest circumstances. Some are willing to do anything to their fellow inmates, however brutal, in order to stay on top or get what they want, while others simply want to make it out to freedom alive. Oz is harsh, unrelenting and utterly compelling as it examines how prisoners exercise what freedom they have. |
